Horror! While Flying, This Presidential Helicopter Was Shot Down

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Incidents of shooting vehicles of state leaders don’t just happen in movies. This can also be in the real world.

One of them happened to Colombian President Ivan Duque. The helicopter carrying him was shot in an attack on Friday (06/25/2021) local time.

The incident occurred as he was flying in the Cattumbo region of Colombia to the city of Cucuta, in the province of Norte de Santander. At that time he was with a number of officials, including Defense Minister Diego Molano, Interior Minister Daniel Palacios, and Norte de Santander governor Silvano Serrano.

No one was injured in the attack. But Duque strongly condemned the action.

“What is clear is that this was a cowardly attack where bullet holes could be seen on the presidential plane,” Duque said in a video message.

The Catatumbo region is on the Colombian border with Venezuela. It is home to an extensive coca plant, the main ingredient of cocaine.

This is where the left-wing National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas operate, formerly the FARC and rejecting the 2016 peace deal with the government. The area is also the center of armed criminal groups involved in drug trafficking.

Earlier this month, a bomb also exploded in the military force used by the 30th Army Brigade in Cucuta. The incident injured Colombian troops and US military advisers.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Defense Minister Molano said the attack was indeed carried out by the ELN.
