Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) and Israel are reportedly discussing the latest military exercises geared towards counter scenarios Iran. This was done to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
A source told Reuters that the plan will be discussed on Thursday (9/12/2021) during the visit of Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz to the US. Both are reportedly worried that the Iran nuclear deal discussed this time will reach a dead end.
“The scheduled US talks with Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz are part of a briefing last October 25 on the full range of available military options to ensure that Iran will not be able to produce nuclear weapons,” the source said.
US and European officials have so far been in discussions with Iran, which is developing its nuclear program. Currently the discussion is getting hotter because of the massive demands put forward by the government of the Land of the Mullahs.
“We are in this problem because Iran’s nuclear program is advancing to the point where it has conventional reasons,” the official said, while still voicing hope for discussion.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said last week that Iran had started the process of enriching uranium to 20% purity with one cluster. The process was carried out from 166 IR-6 engines placed in the mount.
Analysts say that they are not surprised by the actions of Washington and Tel Aviv. Former senior US official and Middle East expert, Dennis Ross, stressed that President Joe Biden’s administration is really serious about countering Tehran’s ambitions.
“When President Biden said Iran would never get nuclear weapons, I mean, he was serious.”
Iran itself had previously reached the point of a nuclear agreement with the US and Europe in 2015. Then during the administration of US President Donald Trump, the deal which named Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) it was repealed and made Iran redevelop its nuclear program.
This infuriated Israel, which is Iran’s rival in the region. The Jewish state had taken actions to curb Iran’s nuclear expansion. One of Israel’s actions that is suspected to this day is the assassination of an Iranian nuclear expert, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.
