A non-governmental organization (NGO) that tracks abuse practices in the prison system Russia received ‘thousands’ of videos showing the beating and torture of prisoners. This video is said to reveal the rampant torture in prisons.
Mediazona news site on Tuesday (5/10) local time, published three videos obtained by Gulagu.net which reportedly showed a number of prisoners being tortured in a prison hospital in the city of Saratov, Volga.
“This is an unprecedented leak that will send shockwaves across the country. In total, we have more than 40 gigabytes of files showing widespread torture,” said Vladimir Osechkin, founder of the anti-torture rights group Gulagu.net. as reported by The Moscow Times, Wednesday (6/10/2021).
The Kremlin said in a statement that it acknowledged the existence of video footage from the Saratov prison hospital and stated that the Federal Department of Prisons (FSIN) had launched an investigation into the videos.
“If this is confirmed, it will lead to a very serious investigation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told local reporters.
Gulagu.net also shared a video allegedly shot at the same prison in Saravtov with The Moscow Times. The video shows several people using a large object to rape a naked man tied to a bed.
The Moscow Times could not independently verify the content.
According to Osechkin, his organization began receiving the leaked video footage in March of a former inmate at the Saratov prison who was released in February this year.
