NEW DELHI – At least 18 people who were sleeping on the road were crushed to death and 10 others were injured when a truck who was speeding hit a bus which is being parked in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India North.

NDTV News reported the tragedy occurred on Tuesday evening in the Barabanki district on the national highway, which is about 30 kilometers from the Uttar Prades capital, Lucknow. The victims were sleeping on the road in front of a bus that broke down while en route to Bihar from Haryana.

According to Bharat, the survivors, around 130 people had departed from near Ambala in Haryana for Bihar but on Tuesday night their bus broke down and as repairs were scheduled to take time, many of them left.

Barabanki police inspector Yamuna Prasad told Reuters the bus was overloaded and had about 150 passengers on board. He said at least 10 people were injured and sent to the state capital Lucknow for treatment.

On Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a series of tweets, expressed grief over the crash and announced compensation for each victim of nearly Rp39 million from the Prime Minister’s National Aid Fund for the next of kin of those who lost their lives. in the Barabanki accident. In his tweet, Modi said he was “so sad” and expressed his condolences. He informed that he had spoken to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and that arrangements were being made for proper treatment of those injured in the accident.
