A expressway overpass suddenly collapses in China. This incident left four people dead and eight others injured.
Reporting from the Global Times, the toll bridge is in the city of Ezhou, Hubei Province, China. The bridge itself collapsed on Saturday (18/12/2021) afternoon local time.
The bridge that collapsed was not the whole, but only a part of the connection which suddenly collapsed to the side. The bridge with a length of 500 meters then hit three trucks and a car until they were crushed, which was passing right below it.
Apart from causing damage to four vehicles, the collapsed bridge also blocked the two toll roads below it. As a result, the toll road is temporarily closed until the evacuation process is complete.
Temporary suspicion, the bridge collapsed due to excessive load. At the time of the incident, the bridge was being crossed by a truck carrying a load of up to 198 tons. Not long after, the bridge collapsed, hitting another vehicle below it.
The excess weight of the truck is thought to have caused the bridge to become unbalanced. In fact, the load carried by the truck is believed to exceed the load limit of the bridge by almost three times, the maximum load of the bridge itself is only 49 tons. Naturally, if the bridge was unable to withstand the weight until it finally collapsed.
A man named Wang became one of the victims of the horror of the collapse of the bridge. When the bridge collapsed and hit his car, Wang and two of his friends broke the rear window to get out of the car, then they immediately fled from the scene.
“Three minutes later, the bridge collapsed and hit a car. My friends and I felt very close to death at that time,” said Wang.
After being investigated, the bridge was found to be under repair. Even the workers told the truck driver not to cross the bridge, but the driver ignored the warning and forced himself to cross it.
The truck has also been allowed to pass through the toll road by fulfilling a number of conditions because it is carrying a fairly heavy load. However, the truck driver did not go the right way and several times passed the guard post without checking again.
Investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the bridge collapsing and causing casualties. The police, assisted by the China Highway Transport Authority, are investigating the incident more deeply.
