Horror expert James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring) produces new ‘Van Helsing’

Universal continues its quest to bring back characters from their classic monster movies. One of the best known is perhaps Dr. Van Helsing, the arch enemy of Dracula and in the past played by, among others Peter Cushing in Anthony Hopkins.

In 2004, the studio tried to launch an entire Van Helsing franchise with Hugh Jackman like a younger version who came across more like some sort of adventurous ass-kicker. And while it wasn’t a flop ($ 300 million worldwide), it ended up staying with one movie due to mostly negative reactions. FT also had only one 1,5 ster for over.

DEADLINE now has that scoop Universal is making plans for a new film about Van Helsing. Overlord Director Julius Avery will direct and none other than James Wan | will produce.

Plot details are currently not available, but it is safe to assume that the story is about Van Helsing hunting monsters (vampires?), Much like in Bram Stoker’s book. And then just hope it doesn’t turn into a messy CGI orgy like it did with Jackman.

Future
After the false start of The Mummy in 2017 with Tom Cruise to mimic the Marvel Cinematic Universe Universal now have a taste thanks to the success of earlier this year The Invisible Man.

For the future, a whole series of projects have been announced about The Invisible Woman, Dracula, The Dark Army, The Wolfman with Ryan Gosling and a still untitled project with Channing Tatum in the lead.
