They traveled to South Tyrol, they wanted to go skiing, just to spend a carefree time in the mountains. However, seven of the tour group with 16 Germans die. The South Tyrolean heating installer Stefan L. * (27) has it on his conscience after his souff ride with his Audi TT.
–
The first details have now become known from the interrogations. Stefan L. drank himself into a frenzy before his deadly speed ride – out of heartache. His girlfriend had broken up with him just before.
–
«I don’t remember how many beers I drank»
His drunk ride begins in his mother’s apartment in Ehrenburg near Kiens (I). On his way through the Puster Valley, he rattles through several pubs, in Bruneck (I) and in the Ahrntal, as «Bild» writes. L. also stops at the après-ski bar “Paulas Schirmpub”, refueling. It is his last stop on his deadly drunk ride.
–
He pays his bill around 1 a.m. and tells the waiter at “Paulas Schirmpub” that he wants to go to the “Hexenkessel”, as RTL reports. Then he gets into his Audi TT. After a 3.5 kilometer trip, there is a horror crash. “I don’t remember how many beers I drank,” said Stefan L. in tears at his hearing. The fact is, however, that he had 1.97 per thousand.
–
“He knows he’s guilty”
On the main road, where the accident happened, the speed limit is 50. Stefan L. may have driven twice as fast. “He knows that he is guilty,” says his lawyer Alessandro Tonon to RTL. That night, the rescue workers saw a “battlefield”.
–
Stefan L. thundered into the group unchecked. Because there are no signs of braking at the scene of the accident, as reported in “Bild”. The victims were flung 20 to 30 meters through the air. Public defender Tonon: “Stefan L. tried to revive a young person.”
–
“It would have been better if I had died”
The death racer has been imprisoned in Bozen (I) prison since Monday. One of his victims, a young man, is still in mortal danger just four kilometers away. On Wednesday morning, Stefan L. was brought before the judge.
–
The decision is clear: the death driver remains in custody. Because of his unstable constitution, Stefan L.’s two lawyers had not applied for house arrest for their client.
–
His poor psychological condition was also evident at the detention date. The interrogation had to be interrupted repeatedly. He had previously expressed suicidal intentions. “It would have been better if I had died,” he said to his lawyer after the crash.
–
“He knows nothing of the seventh victim”
Controversial: Stefan L. apparently does not yet know the full extent of his drunk ride. He knows that he killed people, but not how many – not even four days after the tragedy.
–
“He knows nothing of the seventh victim,” said defender Valentini. Five of the seven casualties have already been transferred to Germany. According to Italian law, Stefan L. faces up to 18 years in prison for multiple killings in road traffic.
