“The dead were among more than 50 workers repairing a closed section of the rail,” state broadcaster CCTV said on its news app.
It is not clear why the workers were on the other lanes that were open at the time and were walking in the opposite direction.

The accident occurred at 5:18 a.m. as the train passed a bend in the city of Jinchang in Gansu province about 1,200 kilometers west of Beijing.

The train was moving from Urumqi, the capital of the far western Xinjiang region, to the eastern city of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, in a journey that took nearly 56 hours.

Local authorities are still investigating the accident.
