Sydney – A man in Sydney, Australia, thinking he saw a giant caterpillar writhing in between sealed bought from a local supermarket, until he saw a snake’s tongue sticking out. This man was surprised when he realized there was one ular between the plastic-wrapped lettuce.
“I was really scared when I saw a small tongue coming out of its mouth and started sticking out and realized it was a snake because snakes do not have a tongue,” said the man named Alex White, as reported by the news. Associated Press, Friday (16/4/2021).
“I panicked a little bit,” he added.
The snake White found was a venomous snake which, according to local authorities, had made a ‘journey’ of 870 kilometers from the vegetable packaging factory in Toowoomba city to Sydney.
The refrigerator at a local supermarket chain allegedly knocked out the snake, until White bought the lettuce package containing the snake at a local supermarket called ALDI on Monday (12/4) evening local time.
White and her partner, Amelia Neate, saw the snake move as they placed the lettuce on their kitchen table. The two also realized that a part of the plastic packaging had been torn and worried that the snake would come out, so they put the lettuce in a food container.
White then called the animal rescue organization WIRES and a snake charmer finally took the snake away. WIRES reptile coordinator, Gary Pattinson, said the snake was less than 20 cm in size but very venomous.
The supermarket said it was investigating how the snakes got into its products. “We are working with consumers and the team at WIRES to identify the snake’s natural habitat, which is definitely not the ALDI shop!” said the statement of the supermarket ALDI.
