Suara.com – The Marine Environment Monitoring Team (MEM) in England, found sea animal mysterious shipwrecked on the beach with a body size of eight meters.
The animal was found on the coast of Wales slightly decomposed, visibly lumpy and faceless. Experts are confused as to what species the animal is.
The MEM team began photographing the animal figures and asked for help from the London Museum of Natural History, to work together to identify cartilage and animal tissue.
Investigations confirmed that the dead animal was actually a basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), the second largest fish after the whale shark that ate filtered plankton.

“We are trying to investigate what the cause of death was. Unfortunately, usually we can only do it on really fresh animals,” said Mat Westfield, Strandings Coordinator for Wales, quoted from IFL Science, Tuesday (9/3/2021).
With this one finding, he added, that would be impossible, so the researchers went together to determine what the creature was.
When fresh, dead animals are found, Westfield and his team will transport the specimens to the London Zoo, where a necropsy can be done to determine the cause of the animal’s death.
Even though it is too late to dissect the animals, the information obtained could be used by conservation organizations to provide better protection for marine species.
As an endangered species, gathering information about the basking shark is very important work, but the animal is very rarely found stranded by teams in the UK.

“It’s very rare for us to find the animal stranded on a shoreline like this. We had the report one year ago in Newport, but we didn’t come fast enough for the animal to be rolled up in the waves,” added Westfield.
This newly discovered specimen is estimated to weigh around four to five tonnes.
That posed a logistical challenge for experts to remove it as it was stranded on one of the smallest beaches in Wales.
