Mexico didn’t get off to a good start at the Gold Cup. Gerardo Martino’s team did not come by in the opening game Trinidad in Tobago (0-0). Low point was the apparently serious injury of the former PSV attacker Hirving Lozano.
After ten minutes of play, things went awry for Lozano, who collided hard with Trinidad and Tobago keeper Marvin Phillips. After a nudge, he went to the ground before hitting Phillips’ knee hard with his face. Lozano was cared for on the field for minutes. Wearing a neck brace, he was taken off the field by stretcher.

The Mexican Football Association has announced after the game that Lozano is doing well under the circumstances, he is conscious. Jorge Theiler, assistant coach to national coach Martino, saw how the moment affected the team. “We missed many opportunities after that. One team was dominant and that was us. However, the goal did not want to fall.”
Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Phillips ultimately proved to be a major obstacle for Mexico. Erick Gutiérrez and Edson Álvarez started in the starting line-up. The match was stopped twice in addition to the moment with Lozano due to discriminatory statements from the Mexican supporters from the stands.
