A total lunar eclipse will occur on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.
The southern edge of the Moon will pass through the center of the earth’s shadow. The next total lunar eclipse will not occur until March 14, 2025.
The lunar eclipse of November 8, 2022 can be fully observed in the Pacific Ocean and most of North America. It will also be visible on the rising Moon over Australia, Asia and the far northeast of Europe, and in the west over South America and eastern North America.
The last of these eclipses occurred on October 28, 2004. The next such eclipse will occur on November 18, 2040.
This eclipse is the third of the five lunar eclipses of the Metonic cycle that occurred on the same date, November 8-9.
The Metonic cycle repeats itself almost every 19 years. Since it happens on the same calendar date, the earth’s shadow will be in almost the same place as the stars in the background.
