Hornsea 2’s largest wind farm starts supplying electricity

Wind farms are one of the renewable sources planned for the future. After all, wind energy is one of the great goals of the United Kingdom and the controversial Green Deal, which of course emphasizes the need to build various types of storage and strengthen and interconnect infrastructure so that electricity produced on the west coast of Europe can be distributed across the continent. It is becoming the world’s largest wind farm Hornsea 2, which is not yet fully operational, but has already been able to produce and supply its first electricity.

While Hornsea 1 was launched last year and has 174 turbines with a total installed capacity of 1.2 GW, Hornsea 2 will have 165 turbines Siemens Gamesa with an output of 8 MW (the total installed power of the power plant is 1.32 GW). According to Orsted, this should be enough to power 1.3 million British households. The power plant is located 89 km off the UK coast and the system will include 373 km of cables to OSS and RCS stations, from which another 390 km of submarine and 40 km of terrestrial cables will connect to the next station in Killingholm.

Recall that wind turbines are often criticized for not being able to recycle blades at the end of a turbine’s life. In the case of Hornsea 2, this will probably still be the case, however, Siemens Games is the first turbine to have recyclable blades. Recall that a press release from September already mentioned that the first six such RecyclableBlades were produced in Aalborg, Denmark. These will be installed at the German power plant Kaskasi, which is to start producing energy in 2022. A very popular argument against wind farms may gradually cease to apply.

It can be assumed that their use will expand and they may see other upcoming versions of Hornsea. Hornsea 3 was already approved last December, Hornsea 4 is still in the planning stage. Recall, however, that Hornsea 2 will not be the most powerful wind farm for a long time. The United Kingdom is due to be launched in 2026 Dogger Bank power plant, which is to offer a combined output of 3.6 GW after all three phases A, B and C have been launched. –
