Horner: “Then I went all the way against Verstappen and Ricciardo”

Speaking to David Coulthard for the official Formula 1 channel, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner addresses the issue of Sebastian Vettel, who will be leaving Ferrari at the end of the season. The rumors suggest a possible move from the German to Mercedes, where he could form a super duo with Lewis Hamilton.

Horner thinks that Vettel is still very suitable for a seat with a top team, but whether it is a smart idea to put him in a team with Hamilton, he is not so sure.

“Sebastian will have thought a lot about his choice for a long time, no doubt about it. What he has achieved throughout his career is phenomenal. If he decides not to sign a new Formula 1 contract because there are no competitive seats available , he may even be able to return after a year, “predicts Horner.

“Formula 1 will be worse anyway without Seb, he is one of the most successful drivers ever, but you just have to respect his final choice. However, he is still relatively young, so maybe Mercedes can take the headache to be next to him Putting Lewis in a Mercedes car, in which case it would be great for all of us to see “

Because if there’s anyone who knows what it’s like to get a headache from his bickering drivers, it’s the Red Bull team boss. The Briton, who has been at the helm of the Austrian team since 2005, has seen his drivers meet several times over the years.

When asked when the last time was when he got really angry with his drivers, Horner shouldn’t think long. “I am someone where the frustration slowly builds up, after which it can suddenly be released due to a specific event. Fortunately, that happens to me quite rarely.”

“The last time the bucket overflowed was in Azerbaijan (2018, ed.), When Max and Daniel drove each other off the track. I remember going all the way through the review, so much so that Adrian Newey was even in shock was because of my anger, “says Horner.

“These two kids, Max and Daniel, looked at me like I was an angry scary teacher or something screaming at them. I was really upset because they just threw away a lot of points. That’s the last time that I really went all the way, “said the Brit.

  1. So Horner thought it was OK to abuse Ricciardo and seems to gloat about it – when Ricciardo had far more right to abuse publicly abuse Horner for losing Monaco 2016 but did not. Maybe Horner should have come out and apoligised for his Baku behaviour.
