Horner provides update on possible grid penalty for Verstappen in 2021

The extremely exciting title battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton may last until the very last race. Both title rivals and their cars are close to each other, which means that it comes down to personal mistakes, magical performances and grid penalties.

Verstappen replaced his full power unit at the previous Grand Prix and had a wonderful catch-up race to finish second. This weekend it is Lewis Hamilton’s turn. He must be 10 places back on the starting grid. He just changed his combustion engine.

The big question is therefore whether Verstappen should use an extra engine during the rest of the season or not. “Not under normal circumstances,” said Christian Horner in an exclusive interview with RacingNews365. “But, there is not much about this season that is normal,” the team boss continues with a wink. Red Bull had to write off Verstappen and Sergio Perez’s engines earlier this season after crashes with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Horner is very surprised about Hamilton’s engine change: “I was quite surprised that they are taking the penalty here, but I think it is out of necessity. This track seems to lean more towards Mercedes than us, but let’s see.”

Horner also expects Perez to be able to get involved more often in the battle for the places of honor in the coming races: “It will work out for him. He has had some difficult races, but we are already seeing signs that things are going his way.”
