For the first time since Mark Webber’s arrival in 2008, Helmut Marko and Christian Horner chose to bring a non-Red Bull driver to the team. After disappointing periods with Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon as second driver next to Max Verstappen, they brought Sergio Perez to the team.
In conversation with Autosport Horner tells more about that choice. “We always try to give the youth the chance and Red Bull does that more than any other team. But every now and then you have to look outside the program,” explains the team boss.
He continues: “It was a brave decision on our part, but the right one,” said Horner, who sees nothing wrong with the current line-up of Red Bull and AlphaTauri. “The dynamics in the team are great. In addition, Pierre is doing great at AlphaTauri and is still a Red Bull driver. So it looks good for us.”
According to Horner, there is therefore no reason to change anything and Perez seems to be heading for a new Red Bull contract. “Checo played the part we hoped for. You saw in Azerbaijan, when he won there, he managed to put Lewis under pressure.”
“He collects points for the Constructors’ Championship and plays the teamgame, as we could see in France. He is a great team player and we are very happy with the work he is doing,” said the Red Bull team principal.
