Several times this year Christian Horner and Toto Wolff threw mud at each other in the media. Never before in the hybrid era has there been such a fierce battle between two teams, both on and off the track. In conversation with Channel 4 the Red Bull team boss is asked about his and Wolff’s behaviour. Is this acceptable as team bosses?
“It is of course the first time that Mercedes and Toto Wolff are being challenged,” Christian begins his story. “Toto came to the team and the drivers and engines were all arranged. He’s done a great job to keep Mercedes winning, but he didn’t really have any competition. This is the first time there’s a real fight, a real fight There is respect between the teams, but we both operate in a different way.”
Secretly, Horner enjoys his verbal battle with Wolff. Every now and then, the Austrian shot out of his shell, and that put a smile on the Red Bull team boss’s face. “I’m on the front line, on the pit wall, with the strategists and the engineers, while Toto is in the garage next to the PR guy. It’s different functions, different roles, but the competition is there. We enjoy the battle And the more irritated Toto gets, the more fun it gets.”
Horner firmly believes that Red Bull can still win the championship. The difference with Mercedes is 33 points with seven races to go, while Max Verstappen is two points behind the drivers’ championship.
“The coming months will determine whether we will win the championship. We only have finals to play, so to speak, to make sure we perform at our best. Mercedes can be beaten, but only if we are at our best. Then can we succeed We have already proved that we can do it because we are now in that position.
