Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22, does not involve feasts or parties. You can celebrate this day by doing something positive for the planet.
You can plant a tree, learn more about the dangers of plastic, make a donation, or take part in a Coast Watch event and clean up trash on the capital’s beach.
“Coast Watch is cleaning, let’s say, with a scientific approach. We choose one area on the beach, it is important that this area has an anthropogenic factor,” said the head of the NGO Rohelinelinn Alena Zueva.
Cleaning takes place in a flagged area 100 meters long and 10 meters wide.
“After that, we sort all the garbage and put it into categories, there are 120 categories. We catalog it. And we send this data to a scientific center that studies the Baltic Sea,” she noted.
The cleaning process has been modernized to make it more convenient and enjoyable.
“When we just started cleaning the streets, I did it with my hands. My husband, he is an engineer, said: “I don’t like collecting garbage with my hands, I want sticks like these.” We found them on sale. These are, in fact, sticks for those who find it difficult to bend over can be found in the Invasion Department,” explained Alena Zueva.
Even on a seemingly clean section of the beach there is a lot of garbage: cigarette butts, corks, threads, pieces of plastic and glass fragments. But thanks to the enthusiasm of the participants, after an hour all this disappeared without a trace.
“For Earth Day, I would like people to think more about that same Earth, after all, we live on it,” said the head of the NGO Rohelinelinn, Maxim Zuev.
“I wish people and, in principle, the planet, awareness first of all. Living in cleanliness is much more pleasant. We have problems with global warming, ecology, there are very few clean places left, there is a lot of pollution in the world, and it is important to solve these problems,” said the volunteer Olga.
Environmental activists also call for a boycott of fast fashion, that is, mass-market products that go hand in hand with excess consumption, environmental pollution and the exploitation of natural resources.
“The fashion industry is probably one of the three industries that cause the greatest damage to our planet. Previously, it was customary to repair things, but now it’s easier to throw away the thing and buy a new one,” noted stylist Anna Maksimuk.
We all want to look beautiful and stylish, but for this it is absolutely not necessary to resort to the services of the mass market, because vintage stores provide many opportunities to show your individuality. But the most important thing is that you can give things a new life, and therefore make your contribution to the fight against the overconsumption crisis.
“Make yourself a challenge! This is such a challenge – to put together some very cool bows from already worn things. They are very interesting, here you can find a lot of cool things and for little money, again,” said Maksimuk.
In such stores you can also find rare branded items.
