Hope Solo, former US goalkeeper, heavily sentenced for drunk driving

Former U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo was sentenced in a U.S. state court in North Carolina on Monday to 30 days in jail for drunk driving. She was also given a 24-month suspended sentence and a total fine of $3,100 to cover lab tests.

At the end of March, the 40-year-old former football star was found drunk by local police in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in his car in the parking lot of a department store. Her two-year-old twins were in the back seat, while the former top goalkeeper was apparently unconscious when officers found her.

According to the police report, security forces were alerted by a passerby who saw Solo sitting in the car with the engine running and young children in the back seat. She then refused a blood alcohol test, following which a blood sample was taken. The former world champion and Olympic champion was handcuffed by police and then placed in a cell. She was released soon after. Solo pleaded guilty in court.

The investigation showed that she had three times the legal alcohol limit. The charges of child abuse and resisting arrest were dropped. Hope Solo is a living legend of American women’s soccer. She played more than 200 times for the national team, winning two Olympic titles and a World Cup.
