After a conversation with Darmstadt showmen, the city is examining whether the market rules are relaxed.
Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) and City Treasurer André Schellenberg (CDU) met representatives of Darmstadt showmen for an interview on Wednesday evening.
The background to the conversation was the discussion about to-go offers by the showmen at the weekly markets. These are controversial because of the regulations in the wake of the corona pandemic. According to the city, during the conversation it was agreed to examine a change in the market organization with the aim of being able to offer snack stands on the weekly market. In addition, the city’s marketing is to examine an expansion of the farmers’ markets in the districts. An extension of the Darmstadt Christmas market is also being examined. According to Kämmerer Schellenberg, the magistrate has been planning a “moderate” opening of the market organization for additional offers. This could also increase the attractiveness of the weekly market.
Showman optimistic
The Darmstadt showmen’s association is optimistic “that we can continue to maintain the folk festival tradition in Darmstadt, albeit in the near future in a smaller form and with new formats” – Bernd Salm, the chairman of the association, is quoted with these words.
