Hope for Argentina to come back to the World Cup / WRC

Because of the pandemic, Argentina had to forego hosting a round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in the last two years, and there are high hopes that the WRC will return soon.

In an interview with Argentinian media Motorbox Radio, David Edeli, coordinator of the rally, gave an update on the situation of this event.

“The reason we deviated from the schedule this year was more logistical than economic. I hope that in the first half of this year we can confirm whether or not the World Rally Championship will return to Argentina. As soon as we have any leads or confirmations we will get to work quickly, hopefully soon so we can do everything in advance and make an announcement.”

David Edeli returned to the reasons for this year’s cancellation and the general lack of an event outside of Europe at the start of the season.

«At the beginning of the season there were so few hybrid units that no other versions of the cars were ready. That’s why they couldn’t load cars on a trip to America earlier this year. Since the season started in Monte-Carlo in January, there just wasn’t enough time.”

“Now that the year is progressing and the inventory is doubling, it is possible to load the cars onto the ships in January 2023. It would make sense to race in Mexico first and then maybe Argentina. After that, teams can consider placing the cars in New Zealand or Australia, depending on the rally. While the 2022 WRC Championship will not feature any events in America, next year could be very different.”

“The WRC wants maybe three more rallies in America. Depending on the United States, their listing could mean positive or negative news for us. For example, if the WRC promoter chooses the United States and Mexico, we could deviate from the schedule. However, we are working hard on our comeback and we are on the right track. However, we cannot confirm anything yet. We are constantly negotiating between all parties. However, the content of the talks is subject to the non-disclosure agreement, but it is clear that our aim is to bring the World Rally Championship back to Argentina. I think the teams want it too. But I’m pretty sure that decisions will be made before the second half of the season.”
