Hope, Equality, and Autism Advocacy: Conversations with Jason and Mirco von Juterczenko

Jason von Juterczenko: The hope for people. We will not be able to reduce global warming to 2 degrees, even if it were physically possible. But I don’t think optimism is that important, but rather that we take measures, for example to expand the water supply in Ethiopia. This will save lives. Even if it is clear that a lot of people will die due to climate change; you have to pronounce it that way.

What does a better world look like?

Jason von Juterczenko: A better world must first and foremost be more equal and fairer. On the whole, I think we all agree on what that should look like: no hunger, no poverty, drinking water supply for everyone, restoration of ecosystems, global partnerships and peace. The UN’s sustainability goals actually reflect this very well.

Mirco from Juterczenka: In theory, almost all people are in solidarity in this regard; It only becomes difficult when it comes to actually limiting yourself personally.

What would you like to say to other autistic people and their families?

Mirco from Juterczenka: I would advise parents of children on the spectrum to invest more time in building strengths and creating spaces that make development possible.

Jason von Juterczenko: And I would like to tell autistic people not to allow themselves to be reduced to their deficits. You are not disturbed and not a burden either. Autism is a different way of wiring the brain that is associated with many disabilities. But it also comes with a lot of help. If you give autistic people the space to develop, they can give a lot to the world. We need autistic people.

The search for Jason’s favorite football team brings the whole family closer together.
