Hoops fall from the Champions League NOW in a nightmare start for boss Postecoglou

CELTIC’s dream in the Champions League ended after Midtjylland knocked them down in Denmark.

Callum McGregor’s impressive volley seemed to carry the Hoops into the third qualifying round.

But they conceded a draw to Awer Mabil which carried the tie into extra time.

And after just four minutes, Celtic were behind when Raphael Onyedika fired a high shot to the ceiling of the net.

That was enough for the Danes to hang on to progress 3-2 on aggregate.

And the pressure is mounting on Ange Postecoglou and his players ahead of Saturday’s first league game against Hearts.

Postecoglou had made a great decision before the game by naming Scott Bain in goal ahead of Vasilis Barkas.

The young Dane Murray also received his first start at Celtic in place of the suspended Nir Bitton.

Neither team created many chances in a nervous first half.

Celtic had the best chances, but Odsonne Edouard’s volley went wide.

David Turnbull also saw a shot from Jonas Lossl in the home goal.

The only real downside for Celtic in the first half was the card he showed Stephen Welsh.

But it took a moment of magic just three minutes into the second period to open the tie.

And what a blow it was from the new captain McGregor, who took a header from a corner to his chest before diving into the far corner of the net.

It was a fitting goal to win the Champions League final, much less a second round tie.

But it wasn’t done there with the Danes needing just one goal to force extra time.

And Celtic survived a real scare when Bain juggled a ball in front of his goal and needed his defenders to pull him out of a hole.

Substitute James Forrest then could have sent the Hoops in with a second goal, but somehow he dragged away his dying shot.

Celtic would pay the price for that failure just minutes later, when Midtjylland tied in the match and in the tie.

It was a simple goal, with Mabil able to break free from Murray to meet a deep center from Pione Sisto and head past Bain.

The home team had their tails held high as they felt the momentum had turned in their favor.

And Tony Ralston had to make a valiant block to prevent Australian international Mabil from getting a second.

Both teams were looking for a winner in the 90 minutes as the clock ticked. And Forrest was again denied by a brilliant sliding block from Paulinho.

Victor Lind could have won it in injury time, but he sent his volley off the post after a brilliant pass from Evander.

Onyedika, however, made no mistake after 94 minutes to rack up the Hoops’ heartache.
