Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Nine people have been confirmed to have died from monkeypox in Congo during 2022. KThe head of the Sankuru health division in Congo, Dr Aime Alongo, said that 465 cases of monkeypox had been confirmed in the country, making it one of the worst hit in West and Central Africa, where the disease is endemic.
According to him, the persistence of monkeypox in Congo is because the people are fond of consuming dead monkeys and rats.
“Residents entered the forest, taking carcasses of monkeys, bats, and rats that are reservoirs for monkeypox,” the official said, quoted by the Washington Post, Tuesday (31/5/2022).
To date, at least 20 countries are also still grappling with an outbreak that suddenly spreads quickly after years of being unseen.
Meanwhile, Nigeria recorded the first case of death from monkeypox in 2022. The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) revealed that the case of death was experienced by a patient aged 40 years.
These patients have comorbidities and are taking immunosuppressive or immunosuppressive drugs. The NCDC announced that by 2022 it had confirmed 21 of 66 suspected cases of monkeypox, which is usually endemic in West and Central Africa.
The first case of monkeypox broke out in Nigeria in 2017. At least 247 cases have been confirmed in 22 of the 36 states since then with a death rate of 3.6%.
The spike in reported cases of monkeypox in Europe and the US has caused concern among those countries, many of whom have not recorded a single case of the disease in years. More than 250 cases of the disease have been reported in more than 20 countries not normally known to have outbreaks, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
Monkeypox had not previously triggered widespread outbreaks outside Africa, where it is endemic.
One of the new UK cases was recorded in a man a few days after his arrival from Nigeria on May 4.
