Hooded people kidnap elderly woman in Famalicão to steal 500 euros

A new military museum is being born in Guimarães, the work of the Association of Veteran Lanceiros de Portugal (AVLP), which brings together ex-military personnel from the specialties of Army Police and Military Police and is headquartered in City Cot. It will be installed in a set of rooms provided by Misericórdia, on the premises of the old hospital in Guimarães.

The protocol between the two institutions was signed between the provider of the local Misericórdia, Eduardo Leite and the president of AVLP, Fernando Rego, in early March. “Right after the signing of the protocol, we entered confinement and, since then, a series of problems related to the health situation, caused the process to be suspended. We even had members of the AVLP to carry out prophylactic isolation ”, informs Fernando Rego.

At the moment, the museum is in the final stage of installation. “The Association has an agreement with the City Council, which will help fund the installation”, says the president of AVLP. With this museum, the city of Guimarães will attract to itself a collection of more than 30 thousand pieces from a collection that covers all branches of the Army, Navy, Air Force, paramilitary forces, such as the GNR and even organizations of the old regime, such as Portuguese Youth, Portuguese Legion and PIDE, in addition to foreign forces.

It is a set of pieces that Cláudio Monteiro, vice president of AVLP, has been putting together for many years. “I started with military toys and they will have an important part in this museum. But then I evolved to another type of objects: covers, uniforms, documents, in fact I have a little bit of everything in my collection, even vehicles. There are other collectors who are specialized, who have more complete collections in certain areas. The collection that we are going to bring to Guimarães is very eclectic ”, explains Cláudio Monteiro.

“There is the possibility, after we are in operation, of bringing temporary exhibitions to Guimarães, with pieces from other associations and museums with whom we have good relations and to whom we have already lent some of our pieces”, anticipates Cláudio Monteiro.

Cláudio Monteiro’s collection has pieces as distinctive as a UMM all-terrain vehicle, from the Army Police, or a Sachs Hércules 125 motorcycle, passing through books, works of art, uniforms, decorations, scripts, models, communications equipment , covers, toy soldiers or toys.

A museum will consist of an area for permanent exhibition, more linked to the cavalry weapon, the specialty of Army Police / Military Police (Lanceiros) and another reserved for temporary exhibitions. Thematic exhibitions, evocative of historical moments, or exhibitions related to various areas of military interest are planned. “It is not possible to present 30 thousand pieces at once. We will have to make a careful choice ”, previews the AVLP president.

Claúdio Monteiro emphasizes the good relationship with the military institution and with other associations, such as the Portuguese Association of Military Vehicles, which will contribute to making this museum a living organism. “Anyone who visits us twice a year is guaranteed not to see the same pieces,” he says.

The pieces on display will allow the visitor to go back to the French invasions, going through the Liberal Wars, the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps in the Great War, the Second World War, until the Colonial War.

For João Vareta, colonel of cavalry in the reserve and president of the Bureau of the Assembly of the AVLP, “it is very important for Guimarães, the birthplace of nationality, to attract a collection of this value to the city”.

The AVLP president does not yet risk a forecast for the inauguration of this new military museum, “Casa do Lanceiro”, due to the moment of some uncertainty that the country, and particularly the municipality of Guimarães, is going through. “We want, very quickly, to get beyond this installation phase, to move on to the next objective, which will be integration with the community, namely with schools”.
