On April 18, 1983, 63 American and Lebanese colleagues, friends, and loved ones were killed in a terrorist attack by Hezbollah on the United States Embassy in Beirut. They were all working together to build a better future for both the country and the region.
On the 40th anniversary of the attack, we continue to mourn the people whose lives were lost and we continue to honor their sacrifice. The people of Lebanon continue to live under the threat of violence from Hezbollah and its patron, Iran.
The United States of America remains committed to combating terrorism wherever it occurs and to protecting our colleagues wherever they serve their country. The United States of America continues to stand with the Lebanese people as they often struggle in the face of profound obstacles to build a more stable, secure, and prosperous future.
On this solemn day, we rededicate ourselves to these enduring goals and to the partnerships, including with the Lebanese people, who will help us achieve them.
