It was a debt that the Havana Festival had had for a long time. Because if we have something to be proud of, it is to have counted on his endearing friendship and his permanent willingness to collaborate with our dreams, even in the most difficult moments, no matter where or what responsibilities they occupy.
Long before Manuel Pérez Estremera (Madrid, 1944) appeared at the Havana Festival, he was already a well-known figure in the world of Hispanic cinema. His work had begun in film magazines (Film Ideal, Our cine) and theater (Primer Act), even becoming part of the creative group of Notebooks for he Dialoguewhere he worked on the collection of theater texts.
Linked to Televisión Española (TVE) since the 1970s, he accumulated a significant career in series and programs, among which he stood out Fila 7, film weekly. On the other hand, between 1987 and 1992 he was deputy director of external production in charge of the study of scripts and projects for Spanish cinema, co-productions with Latin America, Hispanic and European entities for television, work that ended up bringing him closer to this side of the Atlantic. He also held various executive positions in the SOGECABLE group, and in Canal Plus Spain. He was the producer of the program Warehouses and director of self-produced programs within the film area of this same audiovisual company. From 1998 to April 2004, he was in charge of the purchase of Spanish film broadcasting rights. Such is the importance of his management in charge of this section, that if the work of numerous Latin American filmmakers from the 1980s onwards was possible, it is largely due to the sustained encouragement that Estremera gave to co-productions with Spain, particularly with TVE. .
In Cuba, Manuel Perez Estremera was Head of the Production Chair at the San Antonio de los Baños International Film and Television School, between 1998 and 2000. And as regards the Havana Festival, it would suffice to note that one of its fundamental pillars, the Unpublished Screenplay Contest, owes its existence to a large extent to its tireless management and unconditional support.
It has already been said that “honor, honor.” For Havana, honoring Manuel Pérez Estremera with this Choir goes beyond repaying a debt of gratitude, however great it may be, and it is. Because by doing so, we honor a friendship that is already as old and dear to us as that marvelous torrent of light and sound that floods Havana theaters every year and in whose materialization, without the majority knowing it, many hours of patient and disinterested care are left behind. dedicated by Manuel Pérez Estremera to this Festival and to all the cinema of Our America.
