At MWC 2023, several companies provided us with interesting news in the field of lithium batteries. Xiaomi introduced solid-state batteries with a volume energy density of 1000 Wh/l, Honor introduced again silicon-carbon accumulators. This is far from the first announcement of the use of silicon in batteries (e.g. NanoGraf, Prologium will use silicon), something similar was also announced by Xiaomi already in 2021. In the case of Honor, it is said that batteries with a silicon-carbon anode have a 12.8 % higher energy density than standard lithium batteries (probably with graphite anode).
Honor’s CEO, George Zhao, also said that the higher capacity of these batteries is due to their behavior at low voltage. According to him, at a voltage of 3.5V, they should still have 240% more capacity than the standard ones (680mAh against the remaining 200mAh of the standard). IN of the Magic5 Pro phone, which was also presented at MWC 2023, comes standard with a 5100mAh battery, however, if the new type were used, the capacity would increase to 5450mAh (which is less than 7% to the good). So the numbers are a little bit different here, but basically we can say that we have about 10±3% to spare. An interesting fact is that the Chinese version of this phone has a 5450mAh battery, so it is quite possible that in the case of models sold in China, the new silicon-carbon battery is already a reality that will be sold in stores.
