Republican senators have once again called on President Joe Biden’s administration to place Honor on the list of companies ostracized by the United States, as Huawei or ZTE were under the Trump era. The firm would be according to them, an “arm” of the Chinese government.

Former Huawei subsidiary, sold at the end of 2020 to a consortium made up of 40 Chinese companies, could Honor suffer the same fate as its former parent company? It’s too early to tell, but the pressure is building up even more around Honor. After the Departments of State, Commerce, Energy and the Pentagon in September, some American elected officials would also like the Biden administration to take drastic measures against the brand. At least that’s what we learn from the South China Morning Post (via Gizmochina).
Chinese media reports that several Republican senators led by Marco Rubio (senator from Florida) have called on the Biden administration to place Honor on the list of companies ostracized by the United States. During the Trump era, Huawei was placed on the Entity List, which allows the US Department of Commerce to implement a set of economic and trade sanctions against, in this case, a company foreign. Subsequently, other Chinese firms were also affected by these measures, but sometimes in a more moderate way.
Honor badly crossed out?
In support of their demand, US senators believe that Honor, like Huawei, would represent a threat to national security. In a missive dated October 14, consulted by Reuters, Senator Rubio notably describes Honor as being an “arm” of the Chinese government, taking full advantage of American technologies to which Huawei has been denied access. An argument already used in August last by 14 Republican members of Congress, who had called for blacklister the brand.
« By failing to respond, the Commerce Department risks setting a dangerous precedent, while making our adversaries understand that we do not have the ability, or the will, to punish the blatant financial engineering of an authoritarian regime.Marco Rubio writes in his letter to the Biden administration.
For the time being, however, Honor is not yet worried by the American authorities. As we recalled a few months ago, the severity of the sanctions taken against Huawei was consistent with its involvement in the 5G infrastructure sector. A sensitive area … Honor, it is not present in this market. If he were to be targeted by the US administration, nothing says that he would be as impacted as Huawei.
