Honor 90: A Comprehensive Review of the Latest Photomobile with an Impressive 200Mpx Camera

After a short time, Honor comes with another interesting photomobile – the 90 model
It has a three-member rear assembly, the 200Mpx main camera is worth an extra mention
In addition, however, it also offers a number of creative modes

Honor 90 comes to the market with very interesting equipment. On the one hand, it tries to attract less demanding customers with its price, on the other hand, it offers an advanced 200 Mpx main camera and, in addition to it, an excellent display, a large battery and 66 W charging. But in addition to high resolution, the camera also has a whole range of functions, which we will now focus on.

Three in the back, one in the front

The rear camera assembly is located in two raised circles. In the first one there is a 2MP depth sensor and also the main 200MP camera, which takes photos at a default resolution of 12.4MP. The main sensor has phase focusing, f/1.9 aperture and electronic stabilization.

The Honor 90 has two protruding modules on the back and a total of three cameras in them

In the second circle we find a 12 Mpx wide-angle camera with autofocus and 112° coverage. It also shares the space in the circular module with a dual LED backlight. From the front, a 50 Mpx front-facing camera emerges from the opening, which is super wide and handles a 100° angle of view. That’s really all, the zoom is only digital, namely ten times.

We take pictures during the day

The main camera with a resolution of 200 Mpx looks impressive, but thanks to pixel stacking technology, it takes normal pictures with a resolution of 12.4 Mpx. At first glance, you won’t notice a fundamental difference, but after a while you’ll realize that smaller pictures are less detailed and take up significantly less storage space: a regular picture is 4 MB, a 200-megapixel picture less than 40 MB, so the increase is plus or minus tenfold.

What is a good 200Mpx camera for? Thanks to the extremely high resolution of 16,320 × 12,240 pixels, the picture scores with its sharpness and detail. In practice, you can print such a photo, make a large poster out of it, or cut out only certain parts.

The images taken by the main camera in automatic mode have sufficient depth of field and I would also like to praise the exemplary color fidelity. If you activate the mode with AI adjustment, the images may appear too overexposed and the colors unrealistic. I never recommend these modes if you want to take the most realistic pictures.

Tip: all test images in full resolution can be found here

The same goes for the different filters and beautification modes on the portrait camera. The result is usually insufficient and the edit cannot be removed from the photo ad hoc. In the interior, the set of cameras sometimes washes with the lighting. In a darkened room, noise creeps into the photos – we do not recommend 200Mpx photography at all at the moment, because pixel stacking is the gateway to night mode.

But more on that in a moment. I would like to praise the wide-angle mode, which is used to capture a wider scene. In this respect, it works excellently, although the 112° shot is not one of the best on the market (we can also meet, for example, a 123-degree shot), however, it produces decent, color-true images, only slightly noisy around the edges.

The selfie camera is also made up of pixels, specifically, 12.5 Mpx images “climb” from it in automatic mode. During testing, I did not find any major reservations – it takes very sharp photos, great even in poor lighting and can create an excellent software-generated bokeh effect. For connoisseurs: it can also record 4K videos, although only at 30 fps.

We take pictures at night

The Honor 90 handles night scenes quite well thanks to the aforementioned pixel stacking. The quality of a night photo – regardless of whether it is taken with a main or wide-angle sensor – depends on three main factors. The first is the amount of light in the image, the second is the stability of your hand, and the third is the amount of movement. By the way, this does not only apply to Honor, but to practically all manufacturers.

If you want to take a picture of a marching crowd, expect a blurry result. A part of an illuminated street or a light show in the distance can be captured quite convincingly by the mobile phone. However, they don’t trust themselves so much when taking pictures of completely dark places. Also be careful when taking selfies and portrait photos at night – again, low light can potentially make the photo noisy or blurry.

If the light is really low and you need to take pictures in night conditions, you can use the powerful LED flash on the back. It can illuminate the night scene at a distance of about 4 meters, and it can even light up a larger living room in the interior. During a night selfie session, you can also use the flash, but rather the “software” one – i.e. the white illuminated display.

Bonus modes and features

Portrait pictures have already been discussed. I can really praise the Honor 90, it can create a fantastic bokeh effect (separation of the background from the foreground), and at the same time it highlights the face of the photographed person without any unnecessary embellishments. In addition to Portrait mode, there is also Aperture mode, which allows you to use bokeh even when photographing inanimate objects. As in Portrait mode, you can manually adjust the aperture here.

Macro shots are my favorite, and Honor offers a special mode in its photo app called Super Macro. This allows you to bring the camera closer by approximately 3-4 centimeters and take a detailed picture of the reduced world. Be careful with stabilization though, otherwise your shot will be out of focus. Because the 12Mpx wide-angle camera takes care of macro images, you can also take wide-angle macro photos.

Within the photo modes, there is also a panorama for taking pictures of views and wide-angle panoramas. Our eye could not escape the Photo HDR mode, which, however, does not generate any different images from the normal automatic mode.

Main camera – panorama

At the end, there is still a little love. Honor, as it has for many years, offers a sticker function – you can stick the date, time or even the weather on the photo as a watermark. Although it’s nothing that social networks can’t support, but why not.

The video is available in 4K resolution at 30 fps, or in Full HD at 30 and 60 fps. More interesting than the normal video recording mode, however, is the Multi-video mode, apparently intended for influencers and video-making enthusiasts. It allows you to shoot two videos simultaneously: for example, a shot with the front and rear main cameras, or the rear main and rear wide-angle.

Honor 90 in the highest memory variant (12 GB RAM/512 GB) is sold on the Czech market for 14,990 CZK. However, if you could do with a smaller portion of memory (8/256 GB), you get to the price of CZK 13,490. As part of the current promotion, in addition to the phone, you will also receive an Honor Pad X8 tablet as a free gift.
