Hong Manai: The new Prime Minister of Cambodia who inherited his father’s footsteps
3 hours ago
Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni issued a royal decree on Monday (August 7), appointing Hun Manet as the new Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, succeeding his father Hun Sen who has been in power for nearly forty years.
The moment has special significance because Cambodia has been ruled by political strongman Hun Sen for nearly 40 years.
Hun Sen, 32, became prime minister in 1985, making him Cambodia’s longest-serving leader. Hun Sen announced his resignation last month after winning the general election without any suspense, handing over power to his eldest son Hong Manai.
Under his leadership, Cambodia emerged from the shadow of the Khmer Rouge and achieved economic development. But at the same time, the political environment in Cambodia was gradually becoming authoritarian.
The 45-year-old Hong Manai studied at West Point Military Academy in the United States and the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. As a successor, he served as the deputy commander-in-chief and army commander of the Cambodian army. His leadership style and political views have attracted much attention.
Will Hong Manai lead differently compared to his father? How will he respond to the challenges facing Cambodia?
