Hong Kong police chase protesters after rally

The police in Hong Kong used tear gas against demonstrators critical of the government. The forces wanted to dissolve a rally with thousands of demonstrators in the city center.

Previously, more than a thousand people had gathered in a park to demand democratic reform. The protests later spread to the surrounding streets, contrary to the requirements of the police.

The security forces intervened immediately when the rally turned into a demonstration march. Riot police chased demonstrators and there were several arrests. A water cannon was also available, but was not used.

Protesters build barricades

The police had only approved a stationary rally, but the originally requested demonstration train, however, with reference to previous violent protests prohibited. When the black-clad demonstrators poured into the surrounding streets, some of them built barricades, dug paving stones and destroyed traffic lights.

It is the most recent rally that has been going on since June protestswith which the demonstrators want to prevent China’s growing influence in the former British crown colony. The police apparently used a new tactic and already made numerous protests in front of the demonstrators. Officials also searched passers-by nearby.

Hong Kong has been a Chinese special administrative zone since 1997, in which residents enjoy greater personal freedom than in people’s Republic, The demonstrators see these freedoms at risk. According to a survey by the Reuters news agency, 59 percent of Hong Kong people are behind the protests.
