Hong Kong –
Executive leader Hong Kong, Carrie Lamstated that medical facilities in his area had been overloaded due to the ‘severe attack’ of contagion corona virus (COVID-19). Case increase varian Omicron reportedly threatening to make the ‘zero-COVID’ policy fail.
As reported AFPMonday (14/2/2022), Hong Kong authorities adhered to mainland China’s policy to eradicate even the smallest Corona outbreak with mass quarantine, extensive contact tracing, and continuous social distancing measures since the beginning of the pandemic.
But the highly contagious variant of Omicron penetrated China’s defenses in late December, triggering more than 8,000 cases in just a few weeks. Researchers warned that the daily number of cases could exceed 25,000 next month.
While infection rates remain low compared to other major cities in the world, Hong Kong’s policy of sending asymptomatic cases to hospitals and quarantine facilities has left treatment beds full and waiting periods lengthy.
“The severe attack of the fifth wave of this epidemic has dealt a heavy blow to Hong Kong and overwhelmed the city’s handling capacity,” Lam said in a statement released Sunday (13/2) local time.
Lam stated that the spike in cases had increased the waiting period ‘to receive people who tested positive for (Corona) into isolation facilities’.
Filled with patients queuing for coronavirus tests throughout the last week, hospitals in Hong Kong on Sunday (13/2) local time told people who are ‘in stable condition or have mild symptoms’ to stay home.
