Hong Kongers have only three months before the first batch of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccines expire, Zhang warned.
“All vaccines have expiration dates,” he added.
Hong Kong has provided itself with enough Covid-19 vaccine to vaccinate all of its 7.5 million people and more. However, many people do not want to be vaccinated, which is partly due to distrust of the government, misinformation about vaccines on the Internet and the feeling that vaccination is not a matter of urgency, as the epidemiological situation in Hong Kong is relatively good.
“The whole world is chasing vaccines, and it’s not right that we can buy the vaccine overnight and we have it. What we have now is probably all we’ll have for the rest of the year,” Zhang said.
Hong Kong purchased 7.5 million doses of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine and the same number of doses of Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine.
Sinovac has not yet been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), but is authorized in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong had also ordered 7.5 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, but later refused to buy it, explaining to the authorities that it planned to set aside money for second-generation vaccines next year.
To date, only 19% of people in Hong Kong have received a single dose of Covid-19 vaccine, compared with 14% of both doses.
Even Hong Kong doctors are reluctant to get vaccinated. The Hong Kong Hospital Authority found this month that only a third of staff have been vaccinated.
To date, 3,263,000 doses of Pfizer / BioNTech have been delivered to Hong Kong, of which only 1,231,600 have been used.
