The People’s China tolerates neither dissidents nor historical truth. The new schoolbooks of Hong Kong, a special administrative region now brought to heel by force, no longer contain any reference to the long period of British colonial rule which ended with the handover to China in July 1997.
The objective is, no more and no less, to eliminate the English heritage from the memory of Hong Kong when it is omnipresent, both architecturally and in law. The Chinese Communist Party, in its official historiography, considers that Hong Kong was “never a colony”. Which is to say that it never ceased to belong to China. CQFD.
