The Hong Kong fraudsters convinced an employee of a Chinese financial multinational to transfer money via video conference. They made him believe that he was in a group conversation with, among others, his financial director, who works from the United Kingdom.
Police received a report about the incident on January 29, but by then the money had already been lost. “The investigation is still ongoing and no one has been arrested at this time,” police said. She did not release the name of the affected company.
“The fraudsters found publicly available videos and audio via YouTube and used deepfake technology to imitate their voices,” police said. The videos were pre-recorded.
