Hong Kong –
Passengers on this flight were very upset. They gasped and screamed in fear.
Reporting from Asia News Channel on Friday (3/5), bad weather hit Hong Kong. An Airport Authority spokesman said 61 incoming and 33 outgoing flights were delayed by heavy rain and strong winds. Meanwhile, 12 flights were diverted to the nearest airport on Tuesday (30/4).
One of them is a Cathay Pacific Airways flight. The plane with the flight number CX341 flew from Shanghai to Hong Kong. The flight was delayed 7 hours.
The plane had difficulty landing at the airport due to the bad weather, and it failed to land twice. Another effect is caused by extreme turbulence.
Passengers said they felt waves when the plane did not land. Stomachs were mixed and panic was in the air, finally the passengers screamed in fear.
“I jumped out of my seat at least three or four times, and everything in my bag fell out,” said one passenger.
Not only were they screaming, passengers were also ejected as they were still shaken during the commotion.
“Two attempts to land failed. The first time I moved to an altitude of 2,000m, I felt like I was going to die. All the passengers on the plane started to screamed while the children were stealing,” he replied.
“In the middle of the shaky flight, the sound of vomiting was heard. The whole plane was filled with an aromatic smell,” he said.
The attempt to land not only takes time but also fuel. The plane eventually moved to Shenzhen for refueling, and returned to Hong Kong at 02.42 on Wednesday.
“I don’t want to experience this again in my life, I hope everyone is safe,” he said.
Another passenger said the pilot asked everyone to remain seated for 10-15 minutes after landing. Paramedics boarded the plane to check on all passengers.
A spokesperson for the national airline said that nine Cathay flights were diverted to Shenzhen, Macau and Kaohsiung.
“All affected customers have now arrived safely in Hong Kong,” he said.
Some flights were canceled until Wednesday and passengers were compensated with hotels, meals and transportation.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and express our gratitude for the patience and understanding shown by our valued customers.”
Paul Weatherilt, chairman of the Hong Kong Air Crew Officers Association, said that planes usually carry extra fuel amid the possibility of having to hold a holding pattern or even divert due to bad weather.
“Pilots and cabin crew train and prepare for an event like this. But there’s always a dramatic effect when weather like this comes. It can’t be controlled centrally through real-time operations,” he said.
“It is expected that preparations will be made with extra fuel and a longer diversion. But it is entirely up to the pilots at night to make plans to keep everyone safe.”
