The gold was melted down and shaped into engine parts, screws and gears in two air compressors that were to be sent to Japan. The value of the seized gold is estimated at 84 million Hong Kong dollars (115 million kroner).
– This is the biggest gold smuggling case in the history of the Hong Kong Customs Service, says acting head of the Customs Service’s crime department, Lau Yuk-iung.
Lau says that the smugglers have used their imagination by using compressors to hide the gold, but that the smuggling was revealed because the machines were unusually heavy.
Hong Kong is one of the world’s most important centers for gold trading, and the price of gold has recently been on the rise as a result of political unrest in the world and inflation.
