Hong Kong courtroom finds 14 activists responsible of subversion

A Hong Kong courtroom discovered 14 folks responsible of subversion on Thursday, within the largest trial in opposition to pro-democracy activists since China imposed a nationwide safety legislation on the semi-autonomous metropolis to remove dissent.

Amongst these convicted are former legislators Ray Chan and Leung Kwok-hung, in addition to journalist Gywneth Ho.

China imposed a nationwide safety legislation on Hong Kong in 2020 in response to massive and generally violent pro-democracy protests that paralyzed the town the earlier 12 months.

The authorities accused 47 figures of various political tendencies of the opposition of “conspiracy for subversion” alleging that their actions aimed to overthrow the federal government. Of them, 31 pleaded responsible pending a lightweight sentence.

The opposite 16 defendants – together with activists, former legislators and district councilors – disputed the fees.

A lot of the accused have been detained since March 2021, once they had been first delivered to justice.

Thursday’s verdicts are an indicator of whether or not Hong Kong considers non-violent political participation a criminal offense, Eric Lai, a researcher at Georgetown College’s Asian Regulation Heart, instructed AFP.

The defendants are “essential figures within the Hong Kong opposition motion,” commented this analyst, who described the method as “a trial of the pro-democracy motion in Hong Kong.”

The trial was performed by a panel of three judges and was carried out with out a jury.
