Honduras reactivates taxi service at the height of the Covid pandemic
More than 400 taxis have begun to circulate today in the city of Comayagua, located in the central region of Honduras, as part of a test to gradually reactivate the service.
The National Risk Management System (Sinager), the body in charge of controlling the Covid-19 health crisis, on Monday delivered permits to 409 drivers who approved the inspection of the health measures that vehicles must have.
These conditions include the use of protective screens, use of hydroalcoholic gel and disinfectant, to minimize the risk of contagion among passengers as much as possible.
This trial period will last two weeks and then the health department will conduct an evaluation to decide whether to extend the service or suspend it again.
Circulation will only be allowed between 07:00 and 17:00 and each taxi can transport only two people in the rear.
In addition, all vehicle users, both drivers and passengers, must wear a mask.
Comayagua is a city located about 100 kilometers north of the capital Tegucigalpa, and although its population is around 150,000 inhabitants, it has not been one of the most affected by the Covid-19 epidemic.
The reactivation of public transport has been one of the strongest requests made to the government by the population and by the workers themselves in the sector three months after the almost absolute stoppage of work activities in the nation.
Honduras is currently in full swing of its contagion curve with 9,656 cases and 330 deaths from the disease caused by the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
