The lawsuit was caused by defects in the paintwork in white shades such as White Diamond Pearl, Taffeta White, White Orchid Pearl and Bellanova White. The plaintiffs allege that the paint on these vehicles is prone to peeling, blistering, flaking and complete deterioration, significantly degrading the appearance of the vehicles. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The owners claim that the paint defects are due to manufacturing flaws, particularly the unreliability of the three-step painting process. They say the problem has existed since the vehicles were manufactured and inevitably manifests itself over the life of the vehicles. The plaintiffs also claim that Honda knew about the defects but failed to inform customers before selling the vehicles. To support their words, they refer to three technical bulletins issued by the company, which indicated similar problems. As the Tarantas News portal writes, paint defects were recorded on cars operated in different regions of the United States, which excludes the influence of weather or climatic conditions. Most of these vehicles were assembled at Honda’s plant in Lincoln, Alabama, between 2013 and 2017. The painting process was carried out using robotic equipment, which, according to the plaintiffs, could cause defects. This is not the first time that Honda has faced with similar claims. In 2018, a similar lawsuit was filed in Canada over paint peeling on cars. The litigation ended in 2022 with a settlement agreement in which Honda paid the victims $27 million. Owners of cars with defective paintwork are demanding: Reimbursement for repainting costs; Compensation for economic losses; Payment of punitive and compensatory damages.
