Honda is getting rid of its only British race

The carmaker stated two years ago that it intends to close the factory this summer. She described the decision as part of a global restructuring of her activities. She emphasized that the closure of the factory was not linked to Britain’s departure from the European Union.

The factory is located in Swindon. According to the BBC server, Honda employed around 3,500 people, and thousands more worked in its supply chain.

Earlier speculations said that the plant could be sold to another carmaker, councilors from Swindon even lobbied Elon Musk for the Tesla brand to buy it, according to the British website Autocar. But now it seems unlikely that the Swindon plant will continue to be used to make cars.

Production of the Civic will be completed at the plant in July, after which Honda will begin the decommissioning process and hand over the plant to Panattoni in early 2022. Sales of production equipment from the plant will begin through an online auction.

According to Panattoni, the plant will create thousands of new jobs after its transformation, the Financial Times wrote.

Honda opened its Swindon plant in 1985 on a site previously used to make aircraft and trains. Production of cars began here in 1989. Like the Civic, the Accord, Jazz and CR-V models were previously produced here.
