“Honda and Partners Invest $2.19 Billion to Produce Electric Batteries in Japan with Government Support”

On Friday, the car manufacturer Honda and two other Japanese companies announced an investment of 434 billion yen (about $2.19 billion) to produce electric batteries in Japan in a project that will receive part of government support.

Honda and its local partners, “GS Yuasa” and “Blue Energy”, aim to launch the first high-capacity production series in 2027, and to launch other series by 2030, the group said in a statement.

For its part, the Japanese government will grant the three companies about 159 billion yen (about 1.17 billion dollars) in support of the project, according to what the same source added.

Honda is the most ambitious Japanese manufacturer in the field of electric cars, as it announced in 2021 its goal to make all of its sales electric worldwide in the year 2040.

Rival group Toyota sees them on hybrid cars.

Honda announced Wednesday that it will launch in 2025 a new model of electric cars of “medium to large sizes” destined for the North American market, in addition to three other electric types that will be launched in Japan between 2025 and 2026.

Last year, the Japanese group established a partnership with the South Korean company “LG Energy” to build an electric battery factory in the United States, which will exclusively supply Honda factories in Japan at the end of 2025.

The cost of this factory was initially estimated at $ 4.4 billion, and it will be located in Ohio, close to other factories owned by Honda.
