A 68-year-old man and his partner were attacked in Meer en Vaart in Amsterdam on Sunday evening. The man confronted a motorist about his driving behavior. He didn’t like him and hit and pushed him. Police say the perpetrator made discriminatory remarks.
The injuries were so severe that the victim had to be taken to hospital for treatment.
Pink Nieuw-West, a neighborhood organization that defends the LGBTIQ+ community, distributed a message in which the gay couple talks about their experiences. They are talking about anti-LGBTI+ violence.
“A Mercedes suddenly came towards us on the sidewalk and almost ran over us. We discussed his behavior with the driver. Unfortunately, he didn’t accept it and immediately started calling us dirty gay.”
The couple said they wanted to drive away to calm tempers, but the motorist gave chase. The 68-year-old man suffered a blow to the jaw. Even his partner would have been physically and verbally threatened. Eventually, the driver was hit by a bag and got back into his car.
Police are still looking for the culprit. When he left, his trunk was open and the road was very busy. Police are looking for witnesses and anyone with information about the suspect. He is a light-skinned man with short curly black hair. He wore dark suits and dark pants. He’s probably in his thirties.
