As a child, Nico Strahmann played soccer in Bad Vilbel. But over time, the 24-year-old got bored. The tactics in Germany’s most popular sport are “relatively blunt”. At least compared to what the wide receiver of the Frankfurt Galaxy is passionate about these days.

He loves immersing himself in opponents’ videos, analyzing their play and thinking about how to outsmart them. The whole complexity of American football, which is often still hidden from outsiders, coupled with the physical, result in a “unique mixture”.

Although his mother was initially unenthusiastic about the fire igniting in her teenage son due to the risks involved in chasing the egg, she has come to realize that she cannot dissuade him. Today she watches when he performs in the European League of Football (ELF) with the Men in Purple.

Hamburg as a guest

She will also be in the Bornheimer Hang stadium this Sunday when the 2021 champions await their opponents in the final, the Hamburg Sea Devils, for the kick-off at 4:25 p.m. With a view to getting into the play-offs, a very important game, for the second in the Western Conference it is against a direct opponent, because the North Germans are right behind the Hessians with a balanced record in the table, who have only lost one game have four successes on the account. Accordingly, full concentration is required in the duel, especially since for Strahmann and his colleagues a successful performance is also about making quarterback Jakeb Sullivan’s comeback as easy as possible after his injury break. The regular playmaker has overcome the bad knee from the opening game, Substitute Steve Cluley returned home on Thursday.

“It doesn’t make a big difference to me,” says Strahmann. Even if the teamwork with Cluley – whom he already knew from the time they worked together at Universe, although they didn’t act together there – worked so well that the catcher of the American’s passes achieved his own best values.

In the weekend’s win in Milan, Strahmann had four touchdowns and received passes for 175 yards gain. “Everything fell into place there,” says the Frankfurter in retrospect. So good that he became the first European this season to be voted Most Valuable Player of the Matchday. But he will not rest on his laurels. “We each have 24 hours to process a game,” says Strahmann. “Regardless of whether we won or lost.” Then the past must be ticked off and the focus must be on the next task.

Twice in the States

In 2020, the pandemic made the decision for him whether to complete his sports studies in the USA or in Germany. As a 14-year-old, the Hessian had already spent a year overseas as a student and was passionate about football at college. After graduating from high school, he was drawn to the university in Utah. The “crying eye” that he had when he left America again after a year and a half has long dried up. The ELF offered Strahmann a comforting alternative. With his measurements of only 1.80 meters and 85 kilograms he wouldn’t have been enough for the big career over there. With the Galaxy, he emphasizes, he is “100 percent satisfied”. This is definitely mutual.
