Homes evacuated after finding mercury in Amsterdam stairwell

The fire brigade has evacuated nine apartment houses in Amsterdam-East because of the discovery of mercury in the stairwell.

At the beginning of the evening, a strange smell was smelled in the stairwell on Insulindeweg, after which the emergency services were called. Measurements by the fire service showed that the stench comes from mercury, a highly toxic metal. According to the fire service, it is a “large amount”.

Nine homes have been evacuated as a precaution. There were seven people there. They have been placed elsewhere by the emergency services, writes AT5.

It is not yet clear where the mercury comes from and when the residents can return.
