President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva participated, this Saturday (16), in the signing of the contract to begin work on the Copa do Povo project, in Itaquera, east of São Paulo.
The houses will be destined for homeless families who, in 2014, participated in the occupation that became known as the People’s Cup. The residences will be built through the Minha Casa, Minha Vida – Entidades program, in partnership with the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST).
Initially, 650 homes will be built. The federal government will invest R$453 million in the project, of which R$33 million was used to acquire the land. According to Lula, contributions will also be made from the state government and the city of São Paulo.
The project envisages the construction of 12-story buildings, with elevators and 68-square-meter apartments with balconies.
In addition to the agreement signed today, there are plans to build another 2,000 homes on the site, serving all families participating in the occupation.
The ministers of Finance, Fernando Haddad, of Cities, Jader Barbalho Filho, and federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP), leader of the MTST at the time of the occupation movement, also participated in the ceremony.
