Is 1. FC Köln bringing a former homegrown player back to the cathedral city? It’s about Ismail Jakobs, who switched to AS Monaco a year ago for a reported 6.5 million euros. According to a report by Bild a return campaign could become an issue.
As far as transfer activities in the summer are concerned, the Rhinelanders have already gone through some candidates internally. Branimir Hrgota (Greuter Fürth) is mentioned as a hot contender – and Jakobs as an alternative. In his case, it would be a loan.
Cologne wants “more speed and depth”
The feasibility would certainly depend on the ideas in Monaco, where there is a contract until 2026. In the 2021/22 season, the man for the left flank (offensive and defensive) was deployed 39 times for the Monegasques across all competitions, but not as a permanent fixture: 25 substitutions versus 14 starting XI appearances.
The 22-year-old made his breakthrough with the billy goats under coach Markus Gisdol. In the event of a return, Jakobs would have some international experience with him: he was with Monaco in the Champions League qualifiers and then in the Europa League (three appearances each). Cologne will start next season in the Europa Conference League (play-offs).
The fast Monaco professional fits into FC’s sought-after profile – apart from the question of financial viability. Cologne would like to get a new signing for the flank who brings in “more speed and depth”, as sports boss Christian Keller recently explained.
