Home workers are monitored by employer via software | NOW

13 percent of home workers are checked via business software whether they are working or not, according to a survey by CNV. According to the union, this concerns “more than half a million people”. If necessary, CNV will take legal action.

Since the start of the corona crisis more than a year ago, almost everyone has been working from home to reduce the spread of the pandemic. As a result, employers partly lose control of their staff and seem to find it difficult to outsource this.

Research by the CNV trade union among 1200 homeworkers shows that 13 percent of them would be monitored with control software. “And the real number is probably much higher because not everyone knows their business software well”, says chairman Piet Fortuin.

CNV sees the monitoring mainly in the call center sector, but emphasizes that it happens in all sectors.

Rules associated with employee monitoring

Monitoring of employees is not prohibited, but a number of conditions must be met. For example, the employer must have a legitimate reason for doing so that goes beyond the interests and rights of the staff, such as their privacy. Staff must also be kept informed at all times.

Covert checks are also allowed, but only if there is a serious suspicion of fraud or the like. If members file a complaint with CNV, the organization will talk to employers and if necessary legal action will be taken, it sounds.

The CNV survey also shows that 60 percent of home workers feel more lonely than a year ago and that 40 percent have eye complaints from working with a screen for a long time. The union advises people to go outside enough so that they don’t spend all day looking at a screen.
