The long-term physical and mental complaints faced by thousands of patients with a pulmonary embolism can lead to the patient no longer being able to work and thus ending up in social isolation. That is why extra attention to better care after a pulmonary embolism is important. Home rehabilitation can play a substantial role in this.
In addition, the coronavirus is causing an increase in the number of patients with a pulmonary embolism, while no good treatment is available yet.
Home rehabilitation after pulmonary embolism
Three doctors from the LUMC and Amsterdam UMC have a program, together with a professor from Maastricht University and technology partner ProCare developed for home rehabilitation using a Lode bicycle ergometer.
“Immediately after the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, we will activate patients in their home situation to exercise and live a healthy life, so that they can return to work faster, drop out less often and feel fitter. We want to make a big difference with this, ”says Erik Klok, internist at the LUMC and one of the initiators.
Accessible collaboration
The home rehabilitation program developed is unique to the world. The program enables the patient, doctor and physiotherapist to collaborate in an accessible manner on a good rehabilitation of the patient. For this purpose, a special dashboard has been developed on which the results of the rehabilitation can be viewed by everyone. The support of the Thrombosis Foundation and the Vriendenloterij enables Kok and his colleagues to scientifically test the program and prepare for its national implementation.
We often speak to people who suffer from many unpleasant complaints after a pulmonary embolism, while we believe that could have been prevented with good aftercare. With this donation we can finally start to develop good aftercare. We will soon have a nice program that really helps people and that they can follow at home.
